Pinestar lay down on a rock near her den, enjoying the feeling of the hot sun on her cool pelt. She had just came from a hunting patrol and after staying in the cool shade of the forest, the leader was happy to feel the sun warming her chocolate brown pelt.
The leader of Skyclan may have looked peaceful but, truth is, so many worrisome thoughts were running through her head.
"Ugh... We're running out of prey, our territory is small and we're attacked by rogues, loners and even twolegs are starting to become part of the problem!" Pinestar thought to herself, her tail starting to wag in annoyance and worry "Well... Just shut your trap Pinestar. Stop thinking about the clan's problems for a minute just like your mate told you to do. "

Knightblaze limped into camp, a tiny vole clamped tightly in her jaws. She had been out with an earlier patrol, but hadn't returned with them because she wanted to do some extra hunting for her clan. It had taken her this long to find something - anything - that was vaguely worth the energy spend in catching it, and then - just as she made the killing blow - a rogue had tried stealing it. She was able to fight the rogue off and reclaim her prize, but she had some something to her leg in the process - exactly what, she wasn't sure, but it hurt to the dark forest and back - and she was bleeding a bit from (thankfully) shallow scratches along her side.
She dropped the embarrassingly small bit of fresh kill onto the small pile with a sigh. Had it really been worth defending?
Yes. Yes it was worth defending. Small prey is still food for someone.
She noticed Pinestar near her den and padded over. "This whole situation is getting ridiculous."

"Yes it is. It took me forever to just track down that one bird." Pinestar agreed and lifted the upper part of her body to face the warrior and give her a nod of acknowledgement "Come and sit next to me if you want to. Just don't block all the sun."
Pinestar gave a teasing purr and motioned to a spot for her clanmate to sit down. Even though she was the leader Pinestar never distanced herself from any of the other cats and was very sociable.
"Hey, what happened to your leg?" Pinestar asked worriedly, noticing the she-cat's limp and shallow scratches "You also have a few scratches on your flank. Knightblaze, why are you talking to me and not the medicine cat?"

Knightblaze sat beside her leader in the indicated spot, making sure she didn't cast a shadow on the other she-cat. She was glad to be part of the clan - it was a rough life but also a rewarding one. The cats were all so close...she had been close to her twoleg before he left, but not as close as she was to her clanmates. She missed her mother sometimes, but the ache died a little more each day and was easily tolerable at the worst of times.
When Pinestar asked what happened to her leg and then why she wasn't talking to the medicine cat, she shook her head. "It's really not as bad as it looks, and I'm sure there are plenty of others who need assistance more than I. Times are tough and getting tougher, and - I'm not sure - but it feels like the usable portion of our territory gets smaller by the day. If this keeps up..." She let her voice trail off. The leader would surely know what she was going to say.

"Yeah. I know." Pinestar said with a sad sigh, lying back down into her previous position "I really hope it won't come to that Knightblaze. I know we will probably need to resort to our final option but I don't want to think of it even though it looks like we'll have to. But, I'm the leader so I have to take all the possibilities and options into consideration for my clan..."
Pinestar let out another sigh and closed her eyes. She had been considering leading the clan to somewhere else but where? Then there was the problem of the twolegs, a concern she had been talking about more frequntly to her mate, Winterfrost. Pinestar was glad to have him as a mate but sometimes felt guilty as she knew her clan came first then her mate but it was the opposite for her mate. Winterfrost put her before their clan and never asked the same thing from Pinestar.
"Great Starclan I'm lucky to have him as my mate." Pinestar thought to herself "I wonder what I did to deserve him..."

"I think I'll be the judge of who needs a medicine cat or not," Autumnleaf commented through a mouthful of herbs. The pretty long-furred she-cat carefully set the bundle of leaves down before trotting over to the warrior. "Great StarClan, it was another flea-bitten rogue wasn't it?" she hissed, tail lashing slightly. It was bad when they were having to fight for every scrap of food. It seemed like everyday a cat was coming back with some kind of wound. Her blue eyes narrower as she sniffed the cut. "Come to me anytime you get a cut. The last thing we need is someone dying from a little scratch because it's infected," she mewed, flicking the warrior's ear with a fluffy tail.

Pinestar did know where she had been going with her thoughts, and she admitted that they may have to move regardless of how much they'd rather stay. "I understand, I really do. I don't want to leave unless staying would mean the death of everyone. There's kits and elders to consider, and the perils of travel...even the healthy among us that start the journey might not finish it." Her claws dug into the ground before she was even aware she had unsheathed them. "If I felt I had the slightest chance, I'd go and run all the rogues and twolegs from our territory myself." Even she - bloodthirsty as she was - knew that that would be an impossible task.
She was distracted from the increasing darkness of her thoughts by the arrival of their medicine cat, who reprimanded her for not coming to see her. When she asked if it was a rogue, Knightblaze nodded. "Tick-bitten more like. Saw the puny scrap of a rodent I managed to kill and thought he'd take it for himself. If you think I look bad, you should see him." Her whiskers twitched as an amused tone crept into her voice. "He won't have the use of that eye again, I'm sure, and his tail will never look the same again."
Autumnleaf then told her to see her any time she got a cut and that they didn't need someone dying from an infected scratch. She opened her mouth to retort that at least it'd be one less mouth to feed, but then thought better of it. She wouldn't like anyone else talking that way, so what would Pinestar and Autumnleaf think of her saying such things. "I'll do that...are you sure you have enough herbs for everyone?"

"I really don't want to talk about it though. Not yet. Oh, and Knightblaze, watch your thoughts and your actions please." Pinestar's voice was no longer relaxed but warning and full of authority. She sensed that the warrior had dark thoughts forming in her mind and knew how dangerous that could be if a cat allowed them to control his or her actions.
"Hey Autumnleaf." Pinestar rolled over on her back and greeted the medicine cat upside down with a teasing grin "I'm glad I have such a wonderful medicine cat that forces other cats to visit her den when they're sick or hurt no matter what. Otherwise, I'm sure many of our cats would be half-dead by now! Anyway, have you seen Winterfrost? He promised we'd share tongues before I go on border patrol."

Autumnleaf's blue eyes twinkled with laughter at Knightblaze's description of the cat. "I certainly wouldn't want to meet you after sunset," she joked, a bit too fearless for her own good at times. She nudged the she-cat gently but playfully and waved off her concerns with a wave of her tail. "Of course I do. I wouldn't offer if I didn't." She didn't mention that, perhaps, they were getting a little low on supplies, but herbs for wounds wasn't what she was worried about. There was more than one herb more that. It was the more sparse ones that she was growing more and more concerned about. StarClan what should we do? Between this and the rogues...
At Pinestar's question, she couldn't suppress her grin. "Oh, if he promised you something, you know he'd have to be dead not to fulfill it. He's such a drama queen." Any other cat would get their ears ripped off for saying such a thing, but as his sister, she had special right. The usually stern, quiet, brave tom was a complete sucker for Pinestar, and the whole clan knew it. "You've really spoiled his bad boy image, you know?" she mewed playfully. "But I do believe I may have employed his services in carrying the nastiest tasting herbs, and he's currently down by the river plunging his head in the water to try to get rid of the taste." Eyes bright with mischief, the medicine cat held up her paw, looking at her claws smugly.

She stared at the leader for a moment, and then closed her eyes and nodded. "I'll try." But it was hard with things getting worse. She worried about the clan just like everyone else. No matter what, they had to survive, but she wondered just how much more they could take.
Well, at least they still had plenty of herbs, if Autumnleaf was to be believed. That was a good thing. And the medicine cat had been amused by her telling of how she had defended her meager catch. "I would never harm a member of my clan. You don't have to worry. I'd die first." And she meant it. The clan was everything to her now, never mind her kittypet origins.
She listened to the two, letting out a mrow of laughter at the thought of Winterfrost trying to wash off a nasty taste. "Someone should check on him before he drowns."

Pinestar mrrowed in amusement and playfully swatted her sister-in-law, stretching her strong, chocolate-brown front legs. Pinestar like her sister-in-law and considered her a friend even if Autmnleaf didn't.
"Hmm... Maybe I should pay that mousebrain a visit." the she-cat meowed sleepily, the sun lulling her to sleep "I have to make sure my mate doesn't drown! Oh Autmnleaf, you sure know how to take advantage of your brother. Speaking of brothers, I wonder where mine went..."
