Birchpaw fought back a yawn as he padded into camp for what had to be the fifth time that day, a wad of moss clamped in his jaws. He hadn't been told to go fetch moss, but he was bored and lonely and the chore - while tedious - seemed as good a distraction as any. Perhaps if he were bolder, he'd have some friends outside the family, but...well...it was hard talking to others. He didn't know why, but he always felt as though he was being judged. It was stupid and illogical, but he couldn't fight down the feeling and - at least most of the time - it was easier being lonely than it was seeking out company.
The apprentice made his way to the nursery and set the bedding down just outside. He then stepped in and began rolling up the old bedding for easier transport. As he cleared out the den, he wondered what he'd do next. He'd already changed the elders' bedding, and checked them for ticks while he was at it. What else was there to do?

The shadowclan leader walked out of his den. He had been up most of the night thinking about the clan and everything. When he saw birchpaw walk in with moss he smiled. It's good that a young apprentice is doing things. he thought. He walked over to birchpaw and smiled. so how is it going, birchpaw? he asked the apprentice.

He was in the middle of forming nests with the moss when none other than the clan leader appeared. Birchpaw stared at him a moment, looking very much like a mouse about to be eaten, but then he was able to regain his composure. He nodded to the leader and stopped what he was doing. It seemed...rude to be focused on something other than Reedstar when the leader was talking to him.
"Er...fine," he responded, not quite sure how to answer. It was the truth, but conversation was always a puzzle to him. "Thank you." Awkwardly, he added. "How about with you?"

The leader looked at the apprentice and smiled. He doesn't know what to say. he thought. He looked around really quickly to see if Minnowpool was around. She must be out hunting or something. he thought. He turned his focus back to the apprentice. When Birchpaw responded, he listened closely to what he said. Well the clan is doing good and i'm just happy that it is. he said with a smile. I'll let you get back to what you were doing. he said and then walked to the middle of the clearing.

Birchpaw watched his leader, a bit distressed when he walked away. Had he said something wrong? Something offensive? Had he shown he was uncomfortable? But it wasn't that he didn't like Reedstar! He just...he couldn't do anything without a family member there to interpret for him. He hated that he was like that. But how would he explain? And he couldn't just neglect his task now that he had started it. What to do...
He finished with the moss as quickly as he could without rushing through the job and headed back into the clearing, looking around. He really hoped Reedstar wasn't upset with him. He didn't mean to come off bad...

Fernpaw padded into camp carrying three toads and a mouse. She dropped all but one toad on the freshkill pile and padded up to her brother. She had already fed the elders and queens. "Morning Birchpaw take a break and eat." She noticed he looked a bit distressed, she pressed her nose against his shoulder. "You ok Birchpaw? Is there something wrong?" Fernpaw spotted the leader and waved her tail in a friendly manner. "Did the leader say something to upset you?"

It wasn't long after his communication fail with the clan leader that his sister showed up, having hunted successfully for her clan while he did the mundane tasks that no one ever seemed willing to do. He didn't mind, though. Someone had to deal with bedding changing. Why not him? He was perfectly capable in that task since it didn't require him to talk.
She greeted him and told him to take a break, and he went to the fresh-kill pole, choosing another toad for himself and going to eat beside her. When she asked if he was okay, he nodded, and when she asked if the leader said something to upset him, he shook his head. "I think...I think I'm the one that upset him..."

Fernpaw was used to how quiet her brother was and it didn't affect her in the smallest. She knew if she was patient her brother would talk to her. When he finally spoke she purred and licked his ear. "Oh you didn't upset him. I'm sure he's just not used to how quiet you can be. Give him time to know that's your normal old self. In the meantime after breakfast want to go hunting with me? I was given the day off so I thought I would use it to do allot of hunting and stock up our fresh kill pile. So how about it just you and me?" She purred softly than took a bite into her toad.

Birchpaw blinked when his sister licked his ear and assured him that he hadn't upset the leader. He flexed his claws in and out as she told him to give him time to know that Birchpaw was normally like that. He hated how he was! He wanted to have an easy time talking to others and make friends just like every other clan cat. Even he didn't understand why he found it so difficult, and it frustrated him.
But then she invited him on a hunt, and the frustration was forgotten. "Sure. I've been trying to be useful today, but dealing with moss does get tedious and boring..." And he enjoyed spending time with his family members. They were the only cats he was truly comfortable with.

Fernpaw purred she loved hunting with Birchpaw. She was one of the few cats that truly understood him. The two had been close since they where kits. Birchpaw was shy always had been. She didn't know why he was so shy. But she hoped he would grow out of it eventually. And she still hoped that. Until than she would always be there for her brother. She finished her toad than gave herself a quick cleaning while she waited for her brother to finish eating. "You have been very useful you think many other apprentices besides you and me would clean out the elders dens with out being told to do so first? I'm sure the elders appreciate the kindness you do them."
