Heathershine was worried about her apprentice. She's wasn't worried about his blindness, he could handle himself, she was worried about him in general. So she went looking for him. "Slushpaw? Where are you?" She called into the medicine cat den softly. She gave a small laugh, it sounded like she was playing hide-and-seek with kits. Heathershine was puzzled over her apprentice. He was so solemn, though he wasn't always like that. She was an apprentice herself when he was born. She remembered how devastated he had been at his mother's death and his sudden blindness. It's none of my buisness. She thought to herself. But he's my apprentice, so I guess he is my buisness. She continued to scour the camp for the apprentice. "Slushpaw!" She called out, hopefully loud enough for him to hear her.

Slushpaw had been laying in the sun, letting his white pelt soak up as much heat as it could. It had been a cold winter so far, and having a white pelt didn't help. Cats with darker pelts were luckier, for their pelts soaked up the sun more and let it warm them. He had been able to find a spot near a bush that blocked the wind, but not the sun. His eyes were closed, but it wasn't like it really mattered. They were pits of darkness that saw only the blackness other cats saw when they simply closed their eyes. Though, today he was trying to imagine the colors he saw in his early months of living. He missed seeing, he really did, but he believed it was a sign from Starclan for him to be a Medicine cat.
Sighing the tom opened his eyes and listened around him. Cats chatted and did their daily duties of hunting and patrolling the area. In Windclan the food pile was usually low in the winter months since rabbits liked to stay in their dens during the cold. Slushpaw didn't mind much, he knew he didn't need as much food as the warriors who used their energy also. Slushpaw on the other hand barely moved much, he laid around and maybe sometimes went on runs to find some herbs. His mentor didn't like him going off out of camp sometimes, she was kind of protective. She reminded him of his mother..
"Slushpaw!" Slushpaw's ears perked forward and he stood. Thinking about his mentor, there she was calling for him. He quickly moved toward the sound, remembering which direction it was coming from and following his paws there. "Heathershine?" He asked taking a sniff of the air for her scent. She, like Slushpaw always smelt like herbs. So it was easy to fine her when he was close enough.

"Hi Slushpaw." She meowed. Heathershine stood if front of him, watching his movements. She wondered what was going through his head, unable to read his face. "I don't have any tasks for you today, unless there is an emergency." She hoped dearly there were no emergencies, things had been pretty peaceful so far this leaf-bare. She knew how fast things could change in this time of year. Escpecially for kits. Heathershine's eyes grew glassy, like they always did when she worried. She blinked and muttered something worriedly under her breath. "...enough catmint?" Heathershine shook her head. "I wanted to talk to you, but it can wait till tomorrow if you just want to relax." Heathershine said growing distant in her own little world.

"Hi Slushpaw." Heathershine meowed to Slushpaw. He sat down, he always had a weird feel when he just stood there to talk to another cat. Like he was going to fall over or something, so he liked to sit on his back hunches. "I don't have any tasks for you today, unless there is an emergency." She kept going, Slushpaw nodded but waited for her to finish. He hated when cats where hurt, but then again it gave him something to do. "I wanted to talk to you, but it can wait till tomorrow if you just want to relax." Heathershine said to him. Slushpaw hated being bored, but he had to wonder what she wanted to talk about. He didn't enjoy talking, but it was a lot better then being bored. He nodded slowly, "Sure, we can talk. What do you want to talk about?" He asked softly. His blank eyes focusing on her face.

"I wanted to ask you if you were alright. I am worried about you." Heathershine said. She had a guess at what he would answer so she continued. "I know things are hard, and I know how you feel but things will get better, I promise." There was a determination in her voice and eyes that was gone in a flash. "I promise." she repeated, more to herself than her apprentice. Heathershine shook her pelt and blinked. The genuine concern in her voice was raw. She touched Slushpaw on the shoulder lightly with the tip of her tail.

"I wanted to ask if you were alright. I am worried about you." Slushpaw already knew were this was coming from. It seemed like all the time cats were asking if he was okay, or how he was doing. Though, before he answered she opened her mouth and kept talking. "I know things are hard, and I know how you feel but things will get better, I promise." Slushpaw snorted, and how many times has he heard THAT. She repeated I promise, but it almost seemed as if she wasn't sure of herself and was saying it for herself and not for Slushpaw. He slightly jumped when her tail touched his shoulder, but not enough for her to really notice. He nodded softly, "How could being blind get better? he sighed, not meaning to be so mean and rude. "Sorry, I guess I just get really bored having nothing to do. If i was a regular apprentice I could go out and hunt or practice fighting.. Or at least if i could see i could watch clouds or other cats. There's almost nothing I can do. "

Heathershine ignored the mean tone in his voice. "I know being blind won't get better. But it will get easier. Things won't be the same but it could've been a lot worse It would've been a lot worse if you were born blind. At least you know what colors are. It would've been a lot worse if you were blind and deaf." The medicine cat meowed to her apprentice. "Try and be a little more optimistic a little more hopeful." Then the she-cat said the wisest thing she had ever said. "A little hope goes a long way." She felt a slight tingle in her pelt and knew her mentor would've aproved at her last words.

Slushpaw closed his eyes, not that it matter much and sighed. He hated when cats told him it could be much worse. They didn't have to go threw the blindness he went through. Yeah a lot of cats had bad pasts, but being blind and losing your mother. They were up there in the list of bad pasts. "Try and be a little more optimistic a little more hopeful." Her words often went through Slushpaw's ear and out the other, but these stuck for some reason. He opened his eyes and stood up on his white paws. "You don't know what its like to be blind and lose your parents and but stuck with... you. He said. It was so rude he felt like it didn't just come out of this mouth. He was just so sick and tired of cats tell him to hope of something. They never said what though..
"And whats there to hope for? Hope to find a mate, I can't do that. Hope not to be blind, nope won't happen either. Hope that i won't sit here and be bored all day because i can't go out and play or hunt or train. That won't happen." Slushpaw started to walk off toward the den he and his mentor shared. Where else could he really go?
